Costa Tropical

The Costa Tropical is a lush and exotic corner of Andalusia, with around 320 days of sunshine a year. During the summer months the average temperatures rise to 25 degrees and more, with winter midday temperatures averaging around 18 degrees. This remarkable climate makes the Costa Tropical Europe’s only subtropic region.

Stretching from Roquetas de mar in the east to Velez in the west the Costa Tropical is an area of complete contrast – in the winter you could be skiing in the morning in the Sierra Nevada and sunbathing in the afternoon by the sea.

The Sierra Nevada, over 3,000 metres high, is just over an hour away from the coast and is in a perfect location for winter sports with its own ski resort. The mountains shelter the coastal region from cold winter winds, while the warm breezes come across the sea  from North Africa creating this unique climate.

The Costa Tropical is stunning with picturesque white Moorish villages around the verdant hills, so there is plenty of sightseeing to do. At Almunecar, crowned by its imposing Moorish castle, you can stroll through the cobbled streets of the old town and shop in the delightful streets, there’s plenty of quaint bars and restuarants to tempt you. On market day  you will find produce such as lychees, custard apples, avocadoes, mangoes, bananas and sugar cane all locally grown, proof of the wonderful climate.

Further inland, visit the world-famous Alhambra at Granada. Alhambra, (qa’lat al-hamra in Arabic) means ‘red castle’ after the red mountain upon which it was built. The Alhambra consists of a ninth century  fortress, palaces, gardens with fountains, lakes and a small city, all within its fortress walls. It is a great place to absorb history, or sit back with a glass of wine and listen to the song of the passing gypsies.

Back on the Costa, Solabrena, 17 kilometres east of Almunecar, is set against the backdrop of the sierra chaparral mountain range. The little white washed town is clustered around a magnificent medieval castle that is well worth a visit.

Just east of Salobrena is Motril, a thriving fishing and commercial  port. This is where you will find the Costa tropicals main shopping area, as well as plenty of restaurants and glittering night clubs. The marina offers a wide selection of water sports and is the best place to seek out boat trips, including excursions to Morocco.

The main airports serving this region are at Malaga, Granada and Almeria. This area is linked by the N340 coastal road and a motorway. The road network is currently being vastly improved and is well on the way to being completed.
